Puzzle #920 - San Diego Bay - January 18, 2014

As it happened (from my Journal archives)

June 30, 2014

Monday 11:19 PM - I've backed off the idea of a "major Creative puzzle" for the large puzzle to be sold at the Puzzle Parley. I made a whole bunch of "Creative Showcase" puzzles for the 2012 parley and I've decided to focus on Long Round for this Parley.. The large puzzle will still be fairly substantial, a photograph of the San Diego Bay taken from my apartment on January 18, 2014 via a zoom lens. The puzzle will be cut in Long Round with around 700 pieces with a sprinkling of a few Creative style pieces in the sky. There will be some color line cutting. This puzzle will measure around 20" x 12 3/4" and will have a wavy border plus a few figurals.

A short while ago I went to the shop and prepared the board for the puzzle. I will print and mount the images this evening. Tomorrow I start a new cutting marathon. I plan to have all of these puzzles completed by the end of the week.

Wednesday 7:40 PM - Tomorrow I plan to design the figural set for #920, the San Diego Bay - January 18, 2014 puzzle and get started with cutting.

Thursday 6:46 PM - Cutting marathon continuing. Today I finished puzzle #919, Mini - Spectra 2. The white areas are cut in Creative and the rest of the puzzle is cut in Long Round. The interface at the boundary of the white is cool, had fun cutting it. Preliminary piece count 215. This afternoon I started work on puzzle #920 - San Diego Bay - January 18, 2014. I did initial cuts dividing the board into five sections, then the wavy border edges and then detail cutting of one of the five sections for about 104 pieces. The puzzle will have around 720 pieces. I've decided to drop the idea of a sprinkling of Creative pieces in the sky. Rather, the puzzle will have 21 figurals!

Saturday 6:12 PM - After a very nice day off, I got back to cutting #920, San Diego Bay - January 18, 2014. I cut about 269 pieces including a bunch of figurals, bringing the count up to about 383, with about 345 pieces to go. As I was in the shop for around 7 hours, the pace was slower, mostly due to the larger size of the puzzle requiring a lot more break down cuts plus all the figurals, also there is some color line cutting. I plan to continue cutting tomorrow and expect to complete the puzzle on Monday.

Sunday 6:06 PM - I made more progress on puzzle #920, San Diego Bay - January 18, 2014 with around 190 more pieces cut including a half dozen figurals, with 155 or so more pieces to go. I'm somewhat regretting making this puzzle! The color transition in the sky is way too subtle for my Long Round cutting style - generating a very very difficult to assemble puzzle. I did add another figural, a witch on a broom, to break up the sky just a little be more. Of course, the choice of this figural has to do with the puzzle being offered for sale at the Puzzle Parley in Salem, MA! If the puzzle doesn't sell at the Parley, I'll put in on eBay with a "buy it now price", and not as the annual auction puzzle.

I expect to complete the puzzle tomorrow.

Monday 6:02 PM - Puzzle #920, San Diego Bay - January 18, 2014 is now completed! With this puzzle I've finished cutting all the puzzles I planned to make for the 2014 Puzzle Parley. I added two more figurals to the super difficult sky section: A whale and a twirl star, bringing the final figural count to 24. Preliminary piece count is 723.

Tomorrow I focus on doing the post cutting work for the recent puzzles, plus assembling the "museum copy" of Mini Octastar. That puzzle may have some double cutting problems. If serious, I'm going to make a replacement puzzle for it. After I wrap up the work for the Puzzle Parley puzzles I need to focus on the "How to sell puzzles in the internet age" parley panel which I'm heading up and associated tasks. After that is done, I will, finally, focus on the Annual Auction Puzzle. Then the kite!
